Wood stove safety
Keep any flammable items at least 3 feet away from the stove. You may need to install a heat shield behind or beside the stove to prevent heat damage to any nearby walls.
Check heating source and chimney pipe
Ensure the stove has been inspected at least once a year, and also make sure the chimney has been properly cleaned each season
Keep fire extinguishers handy
Keep one in potentially risky areas and make sure everyone knows how to use the extinguishers
Create a fire escape plan
Discuss the plan with everyone in the house and run fire drills twice a year to practice. Also make a designated meeting area so everyone can be accounted for.
Never leave hot ashes in the house
Have a sturdy screen on a fireplace, and allow ashes to cool before disposing of them in a metal container.
