Job Description – Regional Handy Person
Anishinaabeg of Kabapikotawangag Resource Council is seeking to hire an individual, on a 12 month contract, to work with the following First Nations on housing maintenance:
- Animakee Wa Zhing #37
- Big Grassy River
- Ojibways of Onigaming
- Northwest Angle #33
- Wauzhushk Onigum Nation
Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Travelling to the five First Nations to assist citizens in troubleshooting and dealing with minor home repairs and maintenance issues including, but not limited to:
- Identifying health and safety issues in individual homes and recommending work and materials to address said issues,
- Investigating reports of mould in individual homes and recommending actions and/or work and materials to address the issues
- Dealing with minor leaks (toilets, faucets, exposed pipes) in kitchens, bathrooms and/or crawlspace
- Issues with exterior doors
- Replacing furnace and HRV filters
- Hot water tank repair
- Testing, maintaining, repairing and/or replacing smoke alarms
- Maintaining and repairing eavestroughs
- Patching shingles
- Checking septic tanks and recommending pump-outs and/or changing of effluent filters (if required)
- Replacing weather stripping
- Changing out switch covers
- Delivering training sessions and workshops (either pre-recorded or in-person) to citizens in each of the five First Nations.
- Assisting in the development and distribution of information packages and checklists to assist tenants in completing preventative home maintenance tasks (i.e. how to prevent and clean mould growth)
- Assisting First Nations in identification of supplies, materials, and tools (and said costs) required to complete more involved repairs.
- Assist First Nations in identifying tradespeople that could undertake more involved or specialized repairs.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will:
- Requires two years’ related experience and one of the following:
- Completion and certification under an Ontario College of Trades (OCT) Apprenticeship Program and possession of a relatable Tradesperson Certificate (Cabinetmaker, Construction Millwright, Drywall Finisher, Electrician, Facilities Mechanic, Facilities Technician, General Carpenter, Hazardous Materials Worker, Painter and Decorator, Plumber, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic, or Sprinkler and Fire Protection Installer), or equivalent training program through a recognized training and certifying body.
- Certified through the Building Owners and Management Institute Canada (BOMI Canada) as a Systems Maintenance Technician (SMT) or equivalent certification program with related experience.
- Consideration will be given to those eligible for and willing to complete the OCT Trade Equivalency Assessment process for experienced tradespeople who have not completed an Ontario apprenticeship but have equivalent qualifications and experience in a trade and who want to become eligible to challenge the certification examination to obtain an Ontario Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) and/or become a member of the College. Alternatively, possesses the relatable experience and is willing to complete the BOMI SMT certification.
- A satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sectors Check must be provided.
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
- A valid Ontario Class G Driver’s license is required.
Preferred Attributes of a Successful Candidate:
- experience in working with First Nations, particularly in First Nation housing,
- a background in the trades and/or a great deal of experience relating to housing repairs and maintenance,
- excellent tact and communication skills with an ability to teach individuals how to carry out minor housing repairs in an easy-to-follow, step-be-step manner,
- extensive network of housing material suppliers and tradespeople,
- access to a reliable vehicle
- working knowledge of computers and Microsoft or Google software
Procedures:
The successful candidate will:
- Be provided with identification (magnetic vehicle decal, badge/name tag) to prevent alleviate any fears amongst community members of an unknown individual and vehicle driving around the communities.
- Work with designated liaisons in each of the 5 First Nations. The liaisons will accompany the successful candidate as he/she completes repairs on individual houses. It is expected the liaison will alleviate any fears or concerns individual householders may have in having the candidate working in their homes.
- Work with the AKRC Housing Working Group to schedule consecutive days within each of the 5 communities
- Work with the AKRC Housing Working Group to ensure that work completed in individual houses is recorded in each community’s housing database
- Keep a log of their mileage and work completed in each of the respective First Nations
- Keep a log of materials used per individual house for repairs/maintenance work
- Communicate with respective Housing Departments in relation to materials and work required to complete repairs
