Signing of Treaty No.3

Anishinaabeg of Kabapikotawangag Resource Council

Standing Strong on Treaty No. 3

On October 3, 1873, our ancestors, the Anishinaabeg of the Lake of the Woods region, entered into Treaty No. 3 with the Crown. This was not a surrender of our lands or our identity—it was an agreement to share and live in peace, rooted in Anishinaabe law and teachings.

For generations, the Crown has tried to diminish or take away the rights promised to us. Yet the Anishinaabeg have never given up, and we continue to stand strong. Treaty 3 is a living, sacred agreement. It affirms our inherent rights to our lands, waters, language, and way of life. These rights cannot be erased.

Why It Matters Today

Treaty 3 reminds us of the strength and resilience of our people. It is the foundation of our sovereignty and our nation-to-nation relationship. Honoring the treaty means holding the Crown accountable and ensuring that future generations know the promises made to our ancestors must be respected and upheld.

Our Commitment as Anishinaabeg

We will continue to:

  • Protect our lands and waters as stewards for the next seven generations.

  • Defend our rights to hunt, fish, harvest, and live as Anishinaabeg.

  • Stand united as a powerful people, honoring the vision and strength of our ancestors.

Treaty No. 3 is not just history—it is our future. We take this day as a day to remember, to honor those who came before us, and to carry forward their teachings, their strength, and their determination. The Crown may try to limit us, but as Anishinaabeg, we know who we are, and we will always rise to protect what is ours.
