The Anishinaabeg of Kabapikotawangag Resource Council (AKRC) is incorporated as an Aboriginal non-profit organization, providing advisory and technical advisory services to its member First Nation communities located throughout Northwestern Ontario on Lake of the Woods. The AKRC requires the services of an Economic Development Officer. This position is responsible for developing, coordinating, managing, implementing, and evaluating current and prospective economic activities of AKRC and its 5 member bands comprised of 7 communities. The EDO shall be a go-getter and actively support member-First Nations using their expertise to help support the character and trajectory of economic growth.

DUTIES:

  • Provides advice to member First Nations to assist in the formulation, draft, planning, and implementation of economic strategies
  • Advises, assists, and delivers economic and employment development programs based on the specific needs of the five-member First Nations (7 communities), including proposal development
  • Assists and directs member First Nations to identify employment developments and training opportunities
  • Advises and assists in the development of First Nations and community members businesses related business services, including aid in the development of business plans and business planning, and risk assessments
  • Research, prepare, and provide advice and assistance in the economic development policy area within the communities
  • Participate and assist in developing a First Nations approach to economic development strategic planning, including the implementation and monitoring
  • Form an economic development group and meet with economic development officers monthly
  • Maintains up-to-date community profiles on member First Nations of AKRC and surrounding areas (including economic Statistics and indicators, local businesses, and services)
  • Liaises with regional, provincial, federal, and other economic development officers and professional associations
  • Develops resources required to support, implement, and monitor effective marketing strategies
  • Provide advice relative to problem-solving and resolution of issues that may directly impact member First Nation and AKRC
  • Prepare and provide verbal and monthly written reports on activities, outcomes, and recommendations
  • Develop and maintain a communication network of economic development stakeholders
  • Prepare annual, quarterly, and monthly reports for partners and stakeholders including GBOC.
  • Coordinate meetings on economic development/working groups/and other committees (to address specific economic development needs and funding opportunities
  • Participate in community events and support events when necessary
  • Assist member First Nations/Economic Development Committee Members as required; this will at times include assisting other staff and AKRC in proposal submissions

  • Support and assist in AKRC’s Economic Development Strategic Plan & Goals to support Member First Nations
  • Other duties as assigned by Director of Operations

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • University degree in the area of commerce and business, or professional accounting designation or
  • Equivalent work experience in the area of commerce, finance would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of First Nation governments.
  • Sound analytical and business skills.
  • Knowledge of First Nation cultures and knowledge of the Ojibway language would be an asset
  • Knowledge of First Nations Treaty-Crown relationship and histories and knowledge of constitutional, legal, legislative and political framework that impacts on First Nations.
  • Experience working with and comprehensive understanding of Ontario First Nations, Ontario First Nations economic development strategies.
  • Knowledge of First Nations culture, history, and issues.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and cross-cultural skills to work in a First Nations environment.
  • Must be a team player.
  • Demonstrated management, planning and organizational skills are required.
  • Must be willing to be willing to travel on the ice road to remote communities.
  • Must have a vehicle and a class “G” license.
  • A pleasure boat operator license would be an asset but not required.

Salary to commensurate with experience and qualifications
